    Our research paper, “Unveiling Temporal Performance Deviation: Leveraging Clustering in Microservices Performance Analysis”, has been accepted for presentation at the 15th ACM/SPEC International Conference on Performance Engineering (ICPE). In the ever-expanding cloud computing landscape, performance is key. Our methodology tackles the challenge of identifying performance issues in microservices. By clustering containers based on performance at different time intervals, we unveil temporal deviations. Applied to the Alibaba dataset, we uncovered stable and dynamic performance patterns – an approach for enhancing overall performance and reliability in modern application landscapes!

This dataset spans 31 weeks, capturing 2 million task submissions, 252 users, and 580 computing endpoints. Explore intriguing observations, from short task runtimes to the diverse use of endpoints. As the first federated FaaS dataset with user workloads, it will be a goldmine for research in FaaS architecture and distributed computing.

Dive into our survey, where we construct a sub-encyclopedia dedicated to Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) schemes—a crucial component in digital business models, particularly in domains like streaming. Our work provides a comprehensive overview, taxonomy, and performance evaluation of 42 ABE schemes. By bridging the gap for developers, we envision a cryptography encyclopedia that simplifies the process of selecting the most suitable encryption schemes for various applications.

Focusing on the transformative impact of deep learning, especially with Trillion Parameter Models such as Huawei’s PanGu-Σ, our paper presents a visionary ecosystem tailored to meet the evolving needs of the scientific community. Delving into the technical challenges associated with serving Trillion Parameter Models for groundbreaking discoveries, the paper outlines essential requirements for a robust software stack and flexible interfaces.

    Our article, “De Bello Homomorphico: Investigation of the extensibility of the OpenFHE library with basic mathematical functions by means of common approaches using the example of the CKKS cryptosystem”, has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Information Security. In the context of the growing number of IoT devices and the associated increased threat of cyber attacks, our study addresses the challenge of selecting the right Secure Group Communication (SGC) scheme. The comprehensive evaluation of 34 schemes, considering computational and communication costs along with security features, is presented. Our use of decision trees simplifies the selection process for centralized, distributed, and decentralized SGC schemes. Arm yourself with these insights for robust IoT security.

    Our paper, “Tournament-Based Pretraining to Accelerate Federated Learning”, has been accepted for presentation at the 4th ACM International Workshops on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Scientific Applications (AI4S). In this work, we introduce three innovative variants of a serverless federated learning framework, specifically addressing challenges associated with leveraging edge data. We introduce tournament-based pretraining that significantly enhances model performance. With these federated learning advancements, we aim to enable researchers to move beyond hurdles and focus on advancing scientific applications.

In this study, we delve into the performance of homomorphic encryption through real-world applications of linear regression. The verdict? While homomorphic linear regression takes minutes, slower than its non-homomorphic counterpart, it stands out for its security features.

    Our journal paper, “Recommendation of Secure Group Communication Schemes Using Multi-objective Optimization”, has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Information Security. This study addresses the challenge of choosing the appropriate Secure Group Communication (SGC) scheme. We systematically evaluate 34 schemes, analyzing computational and communication costs along with security features. Utilizing decision trees, we streamline the selection process for centralized, distributed, and decentralized SGC schemes.

    Our article, “Impact of Prophylactic Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump on Early Outcomes in Patients With Severe Left Ventricular Dysfunction Undergoing Elective Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting With Cardiopulmonary Bypass”, has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Cardiology. In our study, we thoroughly investigated the use of prophylactic intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) in elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) for patients with low left ventricular ejection fraction. The results are conclusive: there is a notable reduction in postoperative low cardiac output syndrome, a lower requirement for support, and no increase in in-hospital mortality. The use of prophylactic IABP emerges as a beneficial strategy for improving outcomes in high-risk cardiac procedures.

    Our paper, “An Empirical Study of Container Image Configurations and Their Impact on Start Times,” just accepted at the 23rd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud, and Internet Computing (CCGRID), delves into an analysis of 200,000 open-source Docker Hub images. Through this extensive examination, we discovered that container start times exhibit a broad range—from milliseconds to seconds—even within the same environment. Notably, our findings reveal that no single dominant configuration feature decisively determines a container’s start time.

    Our research paper, “Searching for the Ground Truth: Assessing the Similarity of Benchmarking Runs”, has been accepted for presentation at the 14th ACM/SPEC International Conference on Performance Engineering (ICPE). Delving into the stability of benchmark measurements, our study scrutinizes 586 micro-benchmarks. We explore the challenges, evaluate previous approaches, and introduce a new heuristic. Even in a peer review scenario, humans find it challenging to identify disimilar benchmark runs, highlighting the complexity of the issue. Notably, our heuristic stands out with an impressive 92% sensitivity, offering a promising contribution to the assessment of benchmarking run similarity.

    Our research paper, “Efficient Data Processing: Assessing the Performance of Different Programming Languages”, has been accepted for presentation at the 14th ACM/SPEC International Conference on Performance Engineering (ICPE). In this study, we delve into the intriguing realm of data processing, specifically comparing the performance of R, Python, and Rust in various tasks. Our paper presents the results of comprehensive benchmarks implemented in each language, revealing significant performance gaps. Surprisingly, even identical code exhibits variations based on the interpreter used. While Rust and Python showcase strong performance, R lags behind in the assessed data tasks.

In this latest work, we introduce COFFEE, a benchmarking approach designed specifically for container orchestrators. Recognizing the critical importance of assessing performance in this domain, our paper addresses the lack of a comprehensive approach until now. We systematically define requirements, link them to metrics, and propose a benchmark architecture.
